The Work of Hansel & Gretel?

Remember the story of Hansel and Gretel?  For those who aren’t, they are a brother and a sister who run away from home, get lost, and come upon a gingerbread house.  Having become famished in their travels they start eating the components of the house until the old lady inside comes out and catches them.  I don’t want to spoil the end for you, so I’ll stop here.  Besides I’ve told enough for my purposes.

The photographs we have in this blog are from something chewing on the shingle tabs like Hansel and Gretel.  We find these damages occasionally, but usually where there are maple trees overhead.  It seems that the maple seeds get stuck under the tab and a squirrel or other rodent claws or chews through the tab to get to the maple seeds.

What does one do to reduce the risk of this?

  1. Get rid of the source of food, that is, the trees.
  2. Clean the roof surface of maple or other seeds.
  3. Prevent the squirrels or other rodents from accessing the roof.

How go about doing any of these is beyond the scope of this article.
