Getting Ready for Winter … Again

Posted by in Buying/Maintaining a Home, Winter Concerns | October 08, 2018

The days are getting shorter.  The leaves are turning colors.  The temperatures are dropping.  The Halloween decorations are starting to go up.  It’s that time of year again.  Winter is approaching.

How is your attic ventilation?  Are the screens on the vents clear of dust (Figure 1)?  How about taking a little time to brush or vacuum the dust off the screens of the attic vents to improve the flow of air through the vents?

Time to be cleaning the leaves and tree debris out of the gutters and downspouts too (Figure 2).

And check those downspout connections.  Are they still connected or are they separated (Figure 3)?

And, time to clean the debris from the catch basins in the yard to reduce the amount of the surface runoff that becomes ground water against the basements walls.

Now then, it’s time to head out to your favorite farm market and get some apples, grapes, pumpkins, or delicious fruits or vegetables.  You deserve it.

Then find a comfortable indoor chair or couch and enjoy the Buckeyes make their way to the college football playoffs (and maybe the Browns make the playoffs [added September 19, 2019]).

Have great autumn.
